Free textbooks, 125.000 pupils to benefit

125 thousand primary pupils will receive free textbooks in their schools before September 17th. 

Previously, editions were only supplied by the state for students from the16 categories that are considered to be in need, whereas this is the first time in three decades that free books will be issued for all pupils across all stages of the basic education cycle.

Director of Pre-University Education at the Ministry of Education, Zamira Gjini, said that this decision offers textbooks only to students of public schools.

However, students do need to be careful not to damage their books as they are required to be returned at the end of the school year. Any lost or damaged texts will require to be paid for. 

"The books will be distributed to schools before September 17th. The books must be returned by the pupils. If the books are damaged, they will need to pay for them," said Zamira Gjini.

In a decision published yesterday at the Council of Ministers, the government announced that the funds made available for the provision of textbooks is valued at 720 million lekë.
