Statement of the Democratic Party, Albana Vokshi
With less than 3 weeks left until the start of the newschool year, the government has not provided any conditions for the developmentof children's education during the COVID 19 pandemic.
The situation becomes even more critical with thecollapse and out of control of over 300 educational facilities due to lastNovember's earthquake. The government did not keep its promise to build schoolsuntil September and now at the risk of COVID 19 the situation is alarming.
About 510,000 students and teachers are directly at riskof infection due to the irresponsibility of the outgoing prime minister and hisincompetent ministers of education and health.
What is the government's plan to accommodate the over23,000 students and teachers who no longer have a school due to the earthquake? How will they be distributed in the classrooms to guarantee distancing, when itis known that the classrooms are overcrowded even without the demolition anddamage of these 300 educational facilities.
The government continues to remain silent on this majorproblem, where the consequences of the earthquake and the pandemic endangerthousands of students and teachers, both in terms of health and in terms of thequality of teaching.
Of the 11 municipalities affected by the earthquake, thesituation is very critical in Tirana and Durres, where more than half of theschools are collapsed and closed. There are over 23,000 students and teacherswho have to be relocated because the government did not build even a singleschool on time.
The safety protocol, published by the Ministry ofEducation, is general and unenforceable in most schools. The instruction doesnot say at all what happens to the class, to the school, if students orteachers become infected.
Parents, students and teachers are unclear about thelessons, about the shifts in schools, how the distance of 1.5 meters ofchildren will be implemented, what will be done to guarantee thehygienic-sanitary conditions, so that the resumption of teaching does not turninto a health disaster.
The Government of Albania is the only one in Europe thathas not given any extra penny to face the pandemic with the reopening ofschools. Children and students are being driven to a forewarned danger withoutensuring at least social distancing.
Improvising the incompetent and irresponsible governmentof Edi Rama can result in even more massive spread of the virus throughschools, if the government does not change its stance and if it does not takeserious measures.
The government has a duty to intervene urgently, notonly to ensure the health of children and teachers, but to guarantee qualityteaching.
The damage caused today by the irresponsibility andinability of the government to manage the pandemic in schools will be felt fordecades. Children, youth, our society do not deserve the country to raise aCOVID generation because of a failed government.
