Meta Demands Referendum On Constitutional Changes: The People To Decide Whether They Like The Coalitions Or Not
President Ilir Meta dedicated his weekly appearance tothe media to the hottest political issue, the constitutional changes for theelections.
A day after the 50-minute meeting he had with theopposition leader Lulzim Basha, President Ilir Meta declared to the public whathe had previously stated in writing that the Assembly is not legitimate toapprove the amendments to the Constitution by vote.
Constitutional changes can only be made with a total of140 votes in favor.
Ilir Meta: The Constitutional amendments zero the June 5 agreement.
Constitutional changes intended to be unilateral and unconstitutional are in complete contradiction with the Venice Commission.
Parliament does not have the constitutional and political legitimacy to make constitutional changes.
Meta said that under normal conditions, the Assemblywill need total agreement to approve the constitutional changes.
But this vacuum, according to him, can only be filled bythe referendum.
Here, Meta also responded to Rama, stating thatsovereignty belongs only to the people, neither to the Assembly, nor to thePrime Minister, nor to the President.
Ilir Meta: I made it clear to you what the situation is in relation to the Constitution and the law and legality in this country where people are dying, people are being infected massively and such conflicts and such ugly events are being invented that can not only plunge the country into a very dramatic isolation and the warnings have been clear but may be in the interest of all those who seek unrest in Albania at this important moment for all Albanians in our region.
The president did not even tell them to leave. Rather he told her not to run away, it is a very serious mistake if you run away.
The president does not leave, they want to remove him when they want to come, and the people are there on March 2. You do not listen to them but they say distribute, distribute.
I also show them the competence, as they have the competence to do these craziness and nonsense, we work with non-party papers.
It is time for all of us to call to mind, this is a Constitution that the Albanian people have voted for, the coalitions have been voted for by the Albanian people, to read Article 96.
They want to do it without coalitions, to put it to a referendum.
From me there is no obstacle. Let the people decide whether they want coalitions or not.
Sovereignty in the Republic of Albania does not belong to the parliament, the president, the local government or anyone else.
Sovereignty belongs to the people and this issue has been decided by the people in Article 96 of the Constitution together with the Venice. We will not choose any eastern model, we have our belonging once and for all.
