"30 Years Of A Journey Together" Kim: US Looks Forward To The Day When Albania Becomes A Member Of The EU
The US has once again expressed support for Albania's path to the EU.
Speaking at the event organized for the 30th anniversary of the restoration of Albania-US diplomatic relations, US diplomat Yuri Kim praised the progress made in implementing reforms.
"Over the years we have worked together for common goals, including the fight against corruption, strengthening the rule of law, democratization, European security and expanding transatlantic ties.
We were so pleased to welcome Albania to NATO and look forward to the day when you are a full member of the EU.
Today, Albania is on the verge of EU membership and again the US is proud to support you as you make the necessary changes for this historic effort. The EU decision to open negotiations with Albania at the end of March is written evidence that Albania has made to implement the necessary reforms. You have done a great job. We look forward to continuing to support you and to continue to work with you to achieve this common goal."
The ambassador once again noted the development that the country has made since the fall of communism.
"If we were to compare '91 with 2021, each of us would have to accept all this positive change that has taken place. We did it together.
This country was once known as North Korea of Europe, today you have become an unwavering ally, partner and dear friend of the USA. 30 years ago, the Albanian people were liberated from the chains of dictatorship and communism, and the United States proudly took the Albanian hand that was extended to it."
The American diplomat also noted the financial support that the US has given to Albania in these 30 years of traveling together.
"We are also pleased that the Americans have come to Albania in different ways, not just as diplomats, but also with the volunteers of their peace corps who have gone to every corner of this country and left their hearts.
Over the last 30 years, the United States has provided $ 1.1 billion in assistance to Albania, which we have used to address the challenges of democracy."
