"We Want Albania Like All Of Europe"/ Youth Day, 30 Years Since The Student Movement Of December '90

Today is December 8, National Youth Day.

Since 2009, with a decision taken by the Albanian Parliament, this date is commemorated as a national holiday in honor of all students of December ’90 and all Albanian youth.

With the expression "We love Albania like all of Europe", a group of students from the Universities of Tirana, supported by their professors became the markers of the historical turning point. Residents of the "Student City” brought the fall of communism and the rise of democracy through peaceful protests.

In their protests, Albanian youth demanded that the system of Western values and the rule of law be established. Young people became the initiators of ending the era of self-isolation and ideological rule and paving the way for a market economy and an open society.

The next day, December 9, the students confirmed the demands to the president at the time, Ramiz Alia.

The protests continued until December 11, when in the meeting with Ramzi Alia the students confirmed. Later, the organizations for the establishment of the Democratic Party started.

The movement and its ideas were joined by pedagogues, academics, intellectuals, citizens of Tirana and other major cities, transforming the Student Movement into a national democratic revolution.
