Kurti, Pro-Union With Albania: We Do Not Have A Law On Referendums, But We Can Solve It

Albin Kurti predicts a future when Kosovo and Albania can be united. The chairman of the winning party in Sunday's election says the issue should be put to a referendum by both states.

Former Prime Minister Albin Kurti is in favor of the idea of uniting Kosovo with Albania if it were to be put to a referendum.

In an interview with the news agency Euronews, the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement said that in order to take this step, his country's constitution must first be changed, as it now does not allow union with another sovereign state.

"We still do not have a law on referendums in Kosovo, but two referendums between our state and Albania would solve such a thing. Once the state of Kosovo is strengthened, peacefully and democratically, I think I will vote in favor."

Vetëvendosje won the elections on Sunday by taking the vote of almost half of Kosovar voters, while the latter punished the two most historic parties, such as LDK and PDK.

Kurti, however, acknowledged that the parliamentary majority he is expected to chair would require other parties to stay in power, such as Serb lawmakers.

"We plan to elect the speaker of parliament, the new government and the new president. We need two thirds of the deputies. It would not help other parties to boycott the process or go to new elections, because in the next round I think they could disappear from politics altogether."

Kurti stressed that the pandemic is one of the urgent challenges that his government will try to address through vaccination.

The former prime minister said Pristina would not seek or receive vaccines from Serbia if offered.

He also added that the dialogue with Belgrade should continue only if it is in the interest of the country, always with the conviction that it was Serbia that committed genocide among Albanians.
