Yuri Kim: There Are Serious Obstacles To Good Government, Corrupt Officials, Caught Justice, Threatened Journalists
A high level anti-corruption conference is being held. Present are the Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj, the Prime Minister Edi Rama, the EU Ambassador, Luigi Soreca and the US Ambassador. The Ambassador underlined that there are serious obstacles to achieving the good government that the Albanian people deserve.
Yuri Kim: The citizens of Albania, like all citizens of the world, deserve to be trusted that the money that comes from the sweat of their labor is being used to improve their daily lives.
When I look at justice reform in Albania, it is a matter of deciding one step after the other. At a historical time, on a mountain that is as steep as it can be. As Luigi and others have said that corruption is a big problem, it is a mountain of problems in Albania, but step by step we are making progress.
There are serious obstacles to achieving the good government that the Albanian people deserve. These barriers include corrupt officials, a political sector caught up in political interests, journalists who become parties to or are threatened by their reporting, state-owned enterprises that prioritize clientelism or friendships over effective operations, and political officials interested in promoting selfish interest instead of being able to do something good for the country.
She also praised the role of the Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj.
"You probably have one of the hardest jobs in all of Albania but you have been persistent in deciding step by step towards climbing your mountain."
