OSCE Ministerial, Rama Does The Balance: We Are In Crisis, We Failed To Address

Prime Minister Edi Rama delivered his speech at the OSCE Ministerial, where it was revealed that the crisis has gripped the institution in this time of pandemic.

Rama has acknowledged that the OSCE has failed to address its weaknesses, focusing on conflicts in Europe and beyond. He added that the problem for this issue has been the lack of will to get out of the crisis.

Rama: I am concerned about the permanent crisis of cooperation, we have failed to address our weaknesses. I call for cooperation, but this have fallen on deaf ears. I have to say this, whether you like this organization or not, or you want to prevent and resolve conflicts or not. Either you want to promote free media, or you do not. It's really simple, our organization is as strong as the will to implement these commitments. If the will is lacking as it is today, then we will be in trouble to get out of the crises that the crises bring us.

Look at what happened in Belarus and how all of a sudden the OSCE remained as a last resort, while other megastructures seemed useless. It is quite sad, but what is happening outside the EU raises the barriers between EU countries and Russia. Ordinary people's worries fall into "de facto" danger.

That needs to change and the sooner the better. Our organization cannot work if the Cold War stance is not left behind once and for all. It must be said and discussed. In no space other than this OSCE space can this be discussed and hopefully happen. No organization more than this can face the challenge of unification.

Prime Minister Rama went on to say that this year has been a test for the OSCE, as he said that the conflicts have affected the world population.

"This has been a particularly challenging year for the OSCE," he said.

The consequences of COVID have affected all areas. It remains an unacceptable situation given our commitments.

The Minsk Accords, 7 years later life continues to lose. During my visit as the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, I saw how the conflict had affected the population. Violations of the ceasefire on the ground, victims of mine explosions. Worrying situation. it is unfortunate that the parties have failed to make further progress under the Minsk agreement. Leaving the Minsk agreements is not the solution."
