Frontex in Albania!

The arrival of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, FRONTEX, in Albania has reactions divided in two opposite directions, with policy-makers considering it a sign of success and police experts referring to the move as a result of failure by the Albanian state.

According to the former Police director Arben Hajdarmataj, the dislocation of Frontex at the Albanian border seems more like a handover of state responsibilities as a punishment for failing to manage the border properly.

However, he did note that we can benefit from the transfer of knowledge resulting from the foreign officers’ experience.

According to police experts, the co-operation with Frontex started in 2009, and the reason why the launch of the patrol has been accelerated is due to the high influx of emigrants, and to trafficking across what is referred to as 'the green border', considering the mission similar to that of the collaboration with the Guardia di Finanza.

For the first time outside an EU country, the Frontex mission officially began on Wednesday, where the border will be monitored by 50 officers.

Officers will be mainly focused on illegal immigrants, but also passenger checks to avoid any illegal activity.
