Food safety in question

All persons who produce, import or sell food products that endanger the lives of Albanian consumers will be punished with between 3 and 15 years of imprisonment.

The new amendments to the Penal Code were presented by Prime Minister Edi Rama at a discussion with stakeholders.

Although the changes have led to an increase in the belief that hormones added to vegetables are now being used above the allowed norms, Rama confirmed that this is a precursory move and that there are no current concerns relating to food produced in Albania.

According to him, this has been confirmed by the fact that no claims on “Made in Albania” exports have been raised by EU countries.

For concrete results and effective control, Agriculture Minister Bledi Çuçi announced during the meeting that the National Food Authority will be fully restructured.

Agro-processors themselves have demanded clear rules to ensure that penalties are not imposed on all producers based only on assumptions.
