Serbs Learning Albanian

Serbs Learning Albanian

Despite ongoing disputes between Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo, good news comes from Kamenica, a small town in the South-East of the country made famous over the recent decades for its high levels of tolerance.

Here, Serbs learn Albanian and Albanians learn Serbian.

The reason is to improve coexistence in life and to gain a better understanding or each others' cultures.

The idea came from the Municipal authorities headed by Qëndron Kastrati, aged 30, the youngest Mayor in Kosovo and the son of former dissident and member of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) who was killed during the war in the, then Serbian, province.

He said the move was just the beginning of a set of processes aimed of removing prejudices.

“This is one of the ways, but it’s only the beginning. It’s crucially important for the future to start this process with young generations who are, so far, still free of prejudices” Kastrati said.

He added that there are many more things which unite the people of Kosovo than there are those which separate them.

Both Serbs and Albanians in Kamenica agreed that knowing both languages was essential for better communication and understanding in everyday life.
