Ombudsman supports protest: The ministry & universities have ignored us

Two weeks after the student protest, the Ombudsman's institution has reacted.

Through a statement, the Ombudsman supports the demands of students seeking access to better conditions for their higher education, insisting on a review of the entire legal framework of the educational system.

The document raises the concern that the new Law has not taken into consideration which is the easing of the burden of payments for the categories coming from socially disadvantaged and disabled individuals.

“Consecutive recommendations were sent to institutions by Ombudsman during 2017 and 2018.

“Almost all the requests and recommendations that Ombudsman has sent to these institutions during the past two years have received superficial and general answers without any type of concrete commitment,” said the Ombudsman, Erinda Ballanca.

The Ombudsman closed their statement with a call upon educational authorities to prove, as soon as possible, their concrete actions and their willingness to meet those recommendations. Furthermore, it called for a review of social responsibility of the entire legal framework of the education system to guarantee the right for quality education for all citizens without any form of discrimination.
