New school year, Veliaj: Teach within capacity!

Students beginning the new school year, starting on the 17th of September at the "Dëshmorët e Lirisë" school in Unit 5 will return to find it completely renovated and with dignified spaces for budding artists!

The Municipality of Tirana is completing the final touches on the works for the reconstruction of the school, while Mayor Erion Veliaj said that all the schools in Tirana are going to be ready to open their doors at the beginning of the school year.

"We have promised that any school we are working on will be ready, so the teams are working until September 17.

"We are at the "Dëshmorët e Lirisë" school, where there is still a lot of work to be done to finish off the sports ground. Meanwhile the auditor has finished, all the interior work is finished, the new bathrooms, all the classrooms.

"Preschool classrooms will be present in most Tirana schools, as a separate class to prepare children for starting first grade," said Erion Veliaj.

He said that besides the investments that are being carried out this year, Unit 5 will also benefit from the construction of 3 new schools.

"This school, like many schools in Unit 5, has faced a real demographic tsunami.

"The population is growing in Unit 5, mostly thanks to the arrival of new couples. The area of unit 5 is so highly populated it is almost a city unto itself.

"This means that needs have increased, so we are doing two things: first, the total renovation of all existing schools and then the construction of 3 new schools.

"The first will be at Olympic Park. Let's free the schools that already exist, 'At Zef Pllumbi', 'Dëshmorët e Lirisë' and 'Petro Nini Luarasi', by adding three new schools to the area.

"In that way, children will need to walk just 500-1000 meters in order to reach their school, allowing for a much better educational process," said Erion Veliaj.

The mayor appealed to Tirana’s school directors to respect quotas and not to record students from other areas, pointing out that all schools now offer the same conditions and standards of teaching.

"Our instruction to directors was this: Respect maximum quotas! Desires to overfill the school and overwork the teachers, in fact, ruin the quality of education for everyone else.

"We must all consider this and respect it as a rule of the Municipality of Tirana and the Education Directorate," said Erion Veliaj.

He said that with the construction of new schools that will be opened this year, as well as with the addition of classes in a number of other existing schools, two areas of Tirana have already eliminated teaching across two-shifts.

While the Minister of Diaspora, Pandeli Majko thanked the Municipality of Tirana for the attention they have shown to Unit 5 and added that investment in schools is an investment for the future.
