The First Generation Of KSF

The first generation of recruits joined the Kosovo Security Force on Friday after passing laws to transform it into an army.

337 new members of the force, of whom 52 are females and 22 are members of minority communities, lined up in the army barracks for their certification ceremony.

Outgoing Defense Minister, Rrustem Berisha, said Kosovo's goal remains NATO membership.

“We are working with our strategic partners for the new mission of the Kosovo Security Force, for the capabilities envisaged by the comprehensive transition plan to be achieved in accordance with the plan and to be ready to fulfill our duties, our obligations and to be factor of peace not only in Kosovo but beyond,” he said.

Kosovo Parliament Speaker, Kadri Veseli, said the army aims to empower and professionalize to be ready for NATO membership. He added that this army serves the peace and stability of the region.

“We do not threaten anyone. We have never done so during our history, buy we will not allow anyone to violate our freedom and our state. The territorial integrity and borders of our state are sacred, today and always,” said Mr. Veseli.

Developments in the ranks of the Kosovo army come as the country is involved in a debate on changing borders. The idea was presented last summer by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Kosovar President, Hashim Thaçi.

Kosovo's political parties have repeatedly opposed changing borders as a way of reaching an agreement with Serbia.
